Big Pond
Pond cleanups # 26 & # 27 for this year. A very busy 2 days of cleanups in Big Pond which is one of the ponds on Three Pond Barrens of St. John’s, NL. I had to use my quad to get in to this one from Groves Road for both trips. I went full circle around it both days and I was very surprised with the amount of old bottles, broken glass and other trash I pulled from it. Some vintage bottles I have never seen before as well. Big thanks to Owen Keough and also to Dallas Smith. Both followers to my page who reached out and offered to cover my expenses on this combined 2 day big cleanup. Your kindness is greatly appreciated and this pond is much healthier and safer because you both care. Stay safe and enjoy the great outdoors:)
Paddys Pond
I pulled this 1 litre bottle off bottom in Paddys pond yesterday. It was standing upright in the mud and full of motor oil. It has been there for awhile and I’m very thankful that the plastic didn’t break down and the oil leak out. One litre of oil can contaminate one million litres of water which is terrible for the fish, frogs, insects, birds, etc. Toxic poisoning and it reduces the oxygen levels as it creates a thin film over the surface which blocks sunlight and stops oxygen from moving between air and water. This bottle of oil will go to a used oil drop off location to be recycled. Water is life! Stay safe:)
Paddys Pond
Pond cleanup #25 for 2026. Paddys pond for the 6th time this season. Another 26 vehicle tires removed from bottom again today in just under 3 hours. That makes 129 tires from this pond this year. Paddys Pond
Here are my results from today’s cleanup of Paddys Pond for the 5th time this year . Snorkelling and free-diving and cleaning up the bottom. 33 more vehicle tires removed today . That makes 103 tires from the bottom of this pond so far this year. TBH; Most of these tires still have a piece of rope through them or screws sticking out of them. Bumpers on wharfs/ docks that broke loose and drifted away and settled to bottom. Please note, I don’t point fingers or try to shame anyone. The tires are there and I will do my best to get them out and make it better for the generations coming after me:) Big thanks to Sherry L. Scott for your support in covering my expenses on this cleanup. Your kindness is greatly appreciated and another section of Paddys Pond is healthier because you care. Stay safe
Paddys Pond

Over the last 10 years I have completed 173 pond cleanups in the summer months, most on the Northeast Avalon and this pond will definately be the most trashed. I managed to recover 11 vehicle tires this morning from the bottom and I seen at least another 30 on bottom in the area I covered . So sad to see this. This makes 20 pond cleanups for this 2024 summer season:) Stay safe everyone.

Robert E. Howlett Hwy roadside
“Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”. If we can deter one person from doing this senseless act of tossing their garbage out into the environment rather than taking it to a landfill site, then today we have made some progress. On my way home from work today I stopped near Raymond’s bridge on the Robert E. Howlett highway, put on my snowshoes and plucked from the alders someone’s garbage from a small renovation job that was tossed there very recently. My dad always says, “ it don’t do any harm, to do good.” Makes no difference if it’s for your neighbour, a stranger, wildlife or the environment. Please respect this beautiful province we call home, stay safe, be kind and feel free to share:)
Galway, St. John's
Spent 45 minutes snowshoeing at 6:30 am this morning up Galway before heading into work and picked up 48 reusable bags that were hung up in the trees. These will be great to reuse for our beachcombing and trail cleanups this spring and fall. Stay safe and hold onto those bags tight,

Robert E. Howlett Hwy roadside
Everyday while driving to and from work I see the same items in the ditch off the Robert E Howlett Memorial Drive. Well today I decided to stop on the way home at several places and remove everything I could that didn’t belong before tomorrow’s snowstorm hits. From Bay Bulls Big Pond to Ruby Line everyone will, for now enjoy the drive without seeing this trash anymore. Anything we can reuse or recycle we will and the rest will go to Robin Hood Bay Landfill. Stay safe and let’s keep NL clean and healthy.

Four Mile Pond
Here’s a feel good story for all to read. It’s called “ Pop’s Pond “ A couple days ago we did a cleanup of one section of Four Mile Pond and found some interesting items including some vintage bottles near the TCH on the bottom of this beautiful waterbody. Our FB post got shared to Wanda Murphy-O’Rielly who reached out to us with her nostalgic and touching story. She tells us of how Four Mile Pond is very special to her and her family as her late grandfather, Frank Rickert, who passed away almost 31 years ago had built a cabin near where we had conducted the cleanup. Wanda’s mom, now 78 year old Irene Murphy, was just 8 years old when Frank came home one day and said he had bought this piece of land and was going to build a cabin, and so he did. This little piece of heaven, the cabin, was a place where Wanda and family spent a lot of time over the years berry picking, fishing, hunting, exploring and swimming. “It’s where they all learned how to swim, “she says. She recalls having many jiggs dinners cooked in the water from the pond. Her grandparents had 8 children and 19 grandchildren so you can imagine the feeds, the stories and the fun times there. Even after the fun ended and it was time to pack up and head home they would all take baths in the pond, which was not at all uncommon back in the day. Eventually with the new highway developments the cabin was taken down to make room for the divided highways and ramps. A lot of fond memories in “ Pops pond “ as they would all refer to it. Wanda, who shares the same birthday as her pop which makes it even more special to her , thanked us for our efforts in cleaning everything up from the pond bottom and asked what we were going to do with all the items, as she was interested in just one thing, one item from a time she holds so dear. We never hesitated and were more than happy to make her day when we told her to drop over and pick up a Vintage embossed glass Javex bottle that we pulled off the bottom near to where her pops cabin was built. Quite possible it was once in the hands of her pop, Frank Rickert, so many years ago. May you and your mom, Irene enjoy this treasure for many years to come. Myself ( Lou) and Jay are delighted the vintage bottle found its home on your mantle and you can see it often to reflect and remember the wonderful memories of your childhood at “ Pop’s Pond.”
Four Mile Pond

A couple days ago we found this life jacket tangled in the branches that hung out over Neil’s Pond during our cleanup. After taking a look at it further we noticed a phone number on the back so we called it and got the story. A lady answered the phone and was thrilled we had called and had found it considering they had walked 3 times around the pond looking for it and had given up with no luck. 2019
Riverhead hillsides, St. Mary's Bay
Spent the day hiking the hillsides near Riverhead, NL moose hunting . Every side trail I took that led me further back into the country I would bring a pile of recyclables out on my way back that I found tossed in the trees . People have no respect for nature! Some of the items I could not take are , hot water tank , microwave, steel door, barbecue, 3 toilets , bathroom sink, vehicle and ATV tires, radio , 45 gallon drums , 2 gill nets , vinyl siding , roof shingles, plastic lawn chairs , etc . Litter degrades natural areas, kills plants and animals and pollutes our waters. We have recycling programs and landfill / waste management sites . Totally unacceptable and unfair to the ones that enjoy the outdoors , our kids and grandkids coming after us and all the animals , birds and fish .
